Public Education is one of the key activities of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is called "Preventive SAR (search & rescue)." We hope that through our efforts, people in the Rochester community will be encouraged to equip their boats properly, wear PFDs, fuel carefully, and observe the "rules of the road".

Our safe boating courses will not only improve your water safety and boating skills, they will also qualify you for a discount on your PWC or boat insurance with most insurance providers. Just send a copy of your boating safety certificate to your insurance agent and start receiving the savings!

Flotilla 45 offers many courses in seamanship and boating safety to the public. Our current Greater Rochester area schedule of classes is listed below. For questions about our public education courses, view our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) or e-mail our Public Education Flotilla Staff Officer.

Our instructors are available to present class on water and boating safety, as well as enviromental responsibility of our water resources to children at schools, camps, recreation activities, and other youth organizations. In additionm, if avaiable we will utilize our remote controlled talking boat, Coastie, to help deliver the message of water safety to the children. Please contact our Public Education Staff Officer via E-Mail to discuss the details and requirements.

About Boating Safety is a joint project between The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Coast Guard. The course has been approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), and it fulfills the education requirements for PWC operators in New York State as well as education requirements for young boat operators. Flotilla 45 offers instructor-led classroom and group instruction versions of About Boating Safety. Location, dates, and times vary, so please see our classroom schedule above.
